NFL owners considering compromise on national anthem policy – Sporting News

The NFL is considering a number of rules changes regarding the national anthem policy ahead of the 2018 season, according to The Washington Post.

The report states the league is considering a compromise which would make standing for the national anthem a team-by-team rule. The owners will gather later this month in Atlanta to hash out some rules topics.

Other options regarding the national anthem are keeping players in the locker room until after the national anthem is sung, or making players remain standing during the national anthem while on the sideline, but giving them the option to remain in the locker room.

The report claims NFL owners differ in opinion on the national anthem subject. Some would like to see all players stand, while others believe that is too strict.

“My guess is they will leave it up to the teams,” a high-ranking official with one NFL franchise said.

Colin Kaepernick, an unsigned free-agent quarterback, was the first to kneel during the national anthem while playing for the 49ers. The topic then hit fever pitch when President Donald Trump tweeted his disdain for kneeling.

NFL owners may disagree on the topic, but it appears there will be more leniency next season.
