Report: Los Angeles Rams tried to sign Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert – Turf Show Times

Well this is interesting.

It sounds like the Los Angeles Rams were in play for Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert. From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

As other tight ends moved around the league on multi-year deals, Eifert had one-year options to choose from as he was able to test the waters of the free market for the first time.

Two league sources told The Enquirer Eifert had to decide between the Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams.

Eifert wanted to remain in Cincinnati, so he afforded the club an opportunity to match the Rams’ offer that could push the deal to about $8 million should he hit all playing time and performance incentives.

The Bengals did in an effort to make an “all in” type of effort on offense in 2018. And no other team would know what his injury history is, and what he can be, than the Bengals.

And from the Bengals’ team site:

The Bengals, believed to have upped their offer to get in the same tier with the Rams and 49ers in the Eifert Derby, are delighted to get him back despite his injury history that has knocked him out of more than half his 80 NFL games.

Since his 2015 season in which he made the Pro Bowl, Eifert has missed 22 of 32 games. He played just one game the year prior.

Injuries are a part of NFL football, but Eifert’s history is certainly lengthy. That the Rams were in play for him is certainly interesting. Were they swooping for a talented player whose market was depressed by injury or signaling some apprehension at the current TE depth chart?

A very interesting rumor as we head into Thursday evening and look to close out the second day of free agency…
