Father time is undefeated.
Los Angeles Rams LT Andrew Whitworth is hoping to continue to stave off the undefeated battle of time at least for one more year. Though his play improved between 2015-16, Whitworth took a slight step backwards in his first season with the Los Angeles Rams especially late in the year. Thankfully, the Rams left tackle was so far ahead that his “steps back” still put him as a very good left tackle in the NFL even with his advanced age.
Entering 2018, Whitworth is still highly respected, rated in the top 100 players per PFF entering the 2018 season at age 36. In fact, considering his age (35+), PFF had him as a top five player at such an advanced age.
While Whitworth had perhaps his worst career game against the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs, he was still very strong and solid for the 2017-18 season. The Rams however, are not resting on their laurels as they drafted OT Joseph Noteboom out of TCU with their first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft to learn and develop behind Whitworth.
Roster Battle
There is no battle here. Whitworth is a lock to be the starting left tackle.
Expectations
Whitworth’s only negative seems to be his age. He’s already 36-years old and would hit 37 before a potential postseason run. While there was definitely some slippage in play last season, he is still a good left tackle and can teach young players like Noteboom the nuances of blindside protection in the NFL.
Look for Head Coach Sean McVay to manage Whitworth’s practice schedule like last year. Don’t be surprised to see his name on the injury report from time to time. Whitworth will likely be the same steady rock of the Rams offensive line.
Chances of Making Final Roster (10/10)
Big White is slated to protect franchise QB Jared Goff’s blindside and open up running lanes for near-MVP RB Todd Gurley. Yes, he is an old man but he still is pretty good at what he does.
If the Rams are to be successful in 2018, Whitworth will have to be a major reason why.
