As a fourth-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, DL John Franklin-Myers was the Los Angeles Rams’ most impactful rookie last season and was consequently awarded the Carroll Rosenbloom Memorial Award winner, which is annually given to the team’s rookie of the year.
Franklin-Myers played mostly in dime packages as well some base defense situations. He recorded two sacks in limited playing time and had a strip sack in Super Bowl LIII. With Dominique Easley and Ethan Westbrooks having moved on and perhaps eventually finding new homes, the road seems paved for Franklin-Myers to be a major rotational contributor in 2019.
Position Battles
DL Aaron Donald and DT Michael Brockers will flank who ever ends up starting at nose tackle, likely rookie DT Greg Gaines or DL Sebastian Joseph-Day. Franklin-Myers appears to be the first option to spell Donald or Brockers for spurts and perhaps will even get the nod over Brockers on some passing downs. It seems the only real competition for this role could come from Morgan Fox (roster preview) who is also in the mix for edge snaps opposite Dante Fowler Jr. Franklin-Myers’ size should make him a better 3-gap fit than Fox though.
Expectations
Franklin-Myers will have an opportunity to return as the Rams’ most improved player this season. He will see plenty of meaningful snaps. As 2019 is a contract year for Michael Brockers, Franklin-Myers’ play this season could greatly impact the vigor with which the Rams attempt to retain Brockers services for 2020 and beyond.
