As we rapidly approach free agency and the NFL Draft, the Rams’ two biggest needs are becoming increasingly clear: cornerback and edge rusher. Unless both Trumaine Johnson and Nickell Robey-Coleman return, the Rams’ need for a corner won’t go away anytime soon. At outside linebacker, it’s almost guaranteed to be a top priority, given the struggles of Robert Quinn and Connor Barwin.
That’s precisely why just about every mock draft we’ve seen up to this point has the Rams taking either a corner or outside linebacker in Round 1. They’re one of the easiest teams to predict, really.
The majority a projecting the Rams to take someone like Denzel Ward, Isaiah Oliver or Joshua Jackson – depending on who’s there – in the first round, but Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports has Los Angeles taking a pass rusher.
Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA. Robert Quinn is a likely cap casualty, so the Rams pick an edge-rusher with a comparable body type in Davenport. He’ll help to keep Los Angeles dangerous up front on defense.
Davenport is a physical specimen at 6-foot-6, 255 pounds. He simply looks like a defensive end, and a good one at that. When you turn on the tape, however, you sometimes get a different feeling.
He’s raw with an unrefined arsenal of pass-rush moves, which cause him to struggle against top competition. He was flat-out unimpressive in the practice week leading up to the Senior Bowl, but he kicked it up a notch when the bright lights went on.
There’s no doubt Davenport has a lot of potential and could turn into someone who consistently gets double-digit sacks year in and year out. As a rookie, that probably won’t happen, but in a few years, he could become dominant.
Add in the fact that Wade Phillips has worked with some elite pass rushers and it’s easy to get excited about Davenport landing in L.A.’s lap at 23.
