The Los Angeles Rams came out of nowhere once again on Wednesday, striking a deal with the New York Giants. They’re sending Alec Ogletree to the Big Apple, along with a seventh-round pick in 2019, for a fourth- and sixth-round selection this year.
In doing so, the Rams save $5.2 million against the cap in 2018. After signing him to a four-year deal in October, no one could have seen this move coming.
However, it’s clear Los Angeles wants to upgrade the linebacker position. With talented prospects in the draft, it picked a good year to do so. But before we get to the draft, let’s take a look at five realistic options in free agency.
Williamson seemed to be out of the Rams’ price range when the offseason began, but that may not be the case anymore. By lowering Alec Ogletree’s cap number by $5.2 million and clearing his contract off the books after this season, the Rams appear to have room for Williamson.
At 25 years old, he’s just now entering the prime of his career. He hardly came off the field for the Titans, recording 92 tackles and two forced fumbles in 16 games. Williamson will likely fetch more than $9 million per year in free agency, but that’s less than the Rams were paying Ogletree.
He’s a far better fit in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense, too, seeing as he played in Tennessee’s odd front the past few years. He’d be a home run signing to replace Ogletree, while also saving the team some money.
When it comes to run-stopping linebackers, he’s the best one available – which is exactly what the Rams need.
