Did the LA Rams run all over Dallas because the Cowboys were unknowingly tipping them off? – Dallas News

FRISCO — There could be one striking reason why the Rams were able to run the ball all over the Cowboys’ previously formidable rush defense in Dallas’ latest divisional-round playoff loss Saturday night.

Los Angeles knew what was coming.

According to Rams offensive linemen who opened up to The Ringer, LA picked up on tells by the Cowboys’ defensive line while scouting ahead of the game. The way certain linemen set up, such as if under-tackle Maliek Collins positioned himself closer to the tackle or guard, indicated stunts were coming.

Stunts are when linemen attack gaps other than the ones they are lined up in front of in order to stress an offensive line and get in the backfield.

The Rams also looked at the way a particular lineman positioned his hands or if a player was tilted one way or the other, according to The Ringer, to predict the coming move.

“They have good players, but we just felt scheme-wise we were able to — we had a lot of tips and tells on what they were going to do in front of us,” said Rams center John Sullivan.

Right guard Austin Blythe said it worked “plus-90 percent” of the time.

The Cowboys’ defense allowed a season-high 273 rushing yards, good for 5.7 yards per carry. C.J. Anderson piled up 123 yards and two touchdowns and Todd Gurley had 115 yards and a touchdown, including a 35-yard scoring run. Obviously, the backs deserve credit, too.

Meanwhile, quarterback Jared Goff wasn’t sacked.

After the Cowboys’ loss to Seattle in September, Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin told reporters that they were able to steal Dallas’ defensive signals.

Dallas linebacker Sean Lee was skeptical afterward because of the care taken in that aspect.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, in his season-ending news conference Monday at The Star, downplayed the Rams’ ability to scout Dallas, though he acknowledged a job well done.

“Any time you go into a ballgame, there are certain things … that are indicators of what a team might do,” Garrett said. “And we certainly have those, the Rams certainly have those, every team you play has those. And what you try to do is, you try to have complements to those things, and we work very hard at that, understanding our self-scout, and understanding what we’re doing.

“Typically teams have tendencies, typically the best teams have tendencies and you play to those tendencies and you also take advantage of those tendencies to do other things off of them, and that’s in all phases of your team.

“So the Rams did a very good job in that ballgame, they deserved to win the game, um, you know that’s really all I have on that.”
