The free safety free agent pool continues to grow by the day as the Baltimore Ravens released Eric Weddle yesterday and the Cleveland Browns decided to not tender Briean Boddy-Calhoun recently, allowing him a chance to hit the market.
Here’s a grossly stacked list of free agent safeties:
The growing list of free agent safeties is pretty impressive…
Earl Thomas
Adrian Amos
HaHa Clinton-Dix
Tyrann Mathieu
Landon Collins
Eric Weddle
LaMarcus Joyner
Glover Quin
John Cyprien
Darian Stewart
George Iloka

The great thing about Weddle is that he’s free and available to sign immediately as he was cut, and as we all know, he wont affect the compensatory pick formula. Weddle continues to be an impact player even at 34-years old. In 2018 he registered 68 tackles, one sack, three pass deflections, three tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits. Weddle was also graded as the 10th-best safety by PFF. If the Rams want to add a veteran who’s reliable and a playmaker on the backend to replace Lamarcus Joyner, Weddle could be the guy.
The other side of the coin is Boddy-Calhoun who wasn’t tendered by the Browns, making him a free agent free to negotiate on March 11th. Boddy-Calhoun is a 26-year old with experience at both safety spots and nickel cornerback. Boddy-Calhoun has only started 22 games in three years with the Browns, registering a total of 138 tackles, one sack, 19 pass deflections, three interceptions, one touchdown, one forced fumble, two tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hits. Boddy-Calhoun didn’t have a great PFF grade as he finished as their 79th-ranked cornerback. Boddy-Calhoun would be an inexpensive and versatile option if the Rams choose to go that route, though he would count against the compensatory pick formula.
In a stacked free agent safety class, the Rams will have a bevy of options to choose from. The two most recently-released guys in Eric Weddle and Briean Boddy-Calhoun could certainly be options.
