Clay Matthews has spent the last 10 years of his career in Green Bay playing for the Packers. For the first time since college, he’s back playing football on the West Coast. He’s obviously excited about being back in Southern California, but it’s a pretty significant change.
Matthews was in a routine with the Packers as one of the veterans, feeling comfortable in the facility, the locker room and the city. Now that he’s in L.A., there are some difference he has to adjust to.
In a sense, he’s almost the “new guy” with the Rams.
“It’s definitely different, especially when you’re in a rhythm of going to the same place, knowing all the people out there in Green Bay and just having a routine,” Matthews said, via ESPN. “That being said, it’s almost nice to break that routine, and although there’s some anxiety that’s involved in that and some nerves … because of the change of pace, because it’s something new, but it also breathes some new life and fresh air into you.”
Matthews has had a few months to get acclimated to his new home, but he admitted the first couple of weeks were borderline difficult for him.
“The first two weeks were, I mean, I hate to use the word difficult, but it was new,” Matthews said. “Which I haven’t had to experience since my rookie year.”
Matthews will play both inside and outside linebacker for the Rams, something he did previously with the Packers. He won’t be locked into just one position, giving the Rams great versatility on the second level.
