The Rams didn’t move to Los Angeles with very high expectations. They hadn’t won more than eight games since 2003, were ushering in a new era with Jared Goff and had an uninspiring coach in Jeff Fisher.

Yet, with it being L.A., fans still wanted to see something great from the city’s new team. It took a couple of years, but the Rams reached the Super Bowl last season and made the playoffs the year before.

Nickell Robey-Coleman helped land the Rams in Super Bowl LIII – both throughout the season and in the NFC championship game – and he knows mediocrity doesn’t fly in Los Angeles.

“Who comes to L.A. to be mediocre? You can’t,” he said in a recent video on Twitter. “Some people just try to be even-keeled. You can’t be even-keeled in L.A. because there’s too much motivation, there’s too much competition, there’s too people to not want to be great.”

The Rams would’ve loved to win it all last season, but just reaching the Super Bowl will help them in the future. They now know what it takes to get to that point, especially for the younger inexperienced players.

“Now that we went to the Super Bowl, we know the ingredients, we know what it takes, we know how you’re supposed to act, we know how you’re supposed to handle things,” he said. “That’s the neat thing about L.A.: There’s no place for mediocrity. You either be great – you either swim or you sink.”

Robey-Coleman and the Rams have their sights set on getting back to the Super Bowl next season, but it’ll take another great year from the entire team. The NFC is rich with talent, from the Saints to the Eagles, as well as the 49ers and Seahawks.

Robey-Coleman is an inspiring player, having overcome so much in his career and life, which makes the whole interview worth watching. It’s also neat that he catches a rockfish, which is the most venomous member of the scorpionfish family in California.
