Free-agent RB Collins suffers broken leg – NFL.com

Alex Collins was expected to sign with a team before the 2019 season kicked off in September. Unfortunately for the free-agent running back, he’ll have to wait longer than expected to see the field again.

The former Baltimore Ravens RB suffered a broken leg two weeks ago and recently had surgery to repair the injury, a source told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Monday.

I refuse to be discouraged,” Collins wrote in an Instagram post Monday evening. “Instead, I have faith and am optimistic about the process. I believe that all that has happened is making me physically and emotionally stronger, and is necessary for me to succeed in life.”

A 2016 fifth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, Collins joined the Ravens in 2017, when he led the team in rushing yards (973) and yards from scrimmage (1,160). His impact on Baltimore’s offense was diluted in 2018, as he shared carries with Gus Edwards and Kenneth Dixon. Collins racked up 411 rushing yards (third on team) and eight total TDs (first) in 2018 before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Collins was a candidate to be tendered by Baltimore, but after the RB was arrested following a car crash in March, the Ravens waived him. Collins has since been charged possession with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana in excess of 10 grams and possession of a handgun in a vehicle.

Rapoport reported that Collins’ legal situation is wrapping up shortly and that the running back, before breaking his leg, had interest from teams and was expected to play in 2019.

Now the running back’s future in football will have to be put on hold.

“I have already begun the healing and rehab process, and I fully trust God’s plan for me,” Collins wrote. “I look forward to getting back to playing football and doing what I love most. Thank you for everyone who has supported me. I’ll be back Irish dancing soon.”
