Cooper Kupp’s return from a torn ACL is one of the most anticipated comebacks of any player in the NFL next season. He was enjoying a terrific second season to the tune of 40 catches for 566 yards and six touchdowns in only eight games before injuring his knee, forcing him to miss the rest of the year.

The Rams can’t wait to get him back on the field – Jared Goff especially – because of what he brings as a receiver. He’s a security blanket, of sorts, consistently finding ways to get open on underneath routes. When Goff was in trouble or needed someone to make a play, Kupp stepped up more often than not.

His impact on the passing game is undeniable, but what sometimes gets overlooked is the way he blocks. Whether it’s getting downfield as a lead blocker for Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods or blocking guys in the slot for Todd Gurley, Kupp is among the best in the league at clearing running lanes.

That aspect of his game is going to make a big difference on offense for the Rams and hopefully spring more big plays for his teammates.

Kupp, Woods and Cooks are some of the best blocking receivers in the NFL, which is a rarely recognized aspect of playing the position.

Having good blockers at wideout is crucial for a team like the Rams, which runs so much outside zone. Kupp being in the slot makes his blocking prowess that much more important because he’s sometimes asked to block safeties, linebackers and of course cornerbacks.

Kupp’s return will provide a spark in the passing game and for the Rams’ ground attack.
