At this point in the offseason, it seems unlikely the Rams are going to add any notable free agents. Not only are there very few out there, but Los Angeles doesn’t have much cap space to play with, either, at just over $5.2 million.
One player who might be of interest to the Rams is Domata Peko. The veteran nose tackle is still on the free agent market and looking for a team. He recently told TMZ Sports that he would love to return to the West Coast to play for a team in L.A., ideally the Rams.
“Coach McVay! Your boy, Domata Peko, here, ready to go. I would love to come out here, represent L.A. and try to pursue that championship,” he said.
There’s no indication the Rams are interested in bringing in Peko, but it wouldn’t be a bad move by Les Snead. Given Peko’s age (34) and availability this deep into the offseason, he could likely be signed for relatively cheap. His last contract with the Broncos, which was signed in 2017, was for $7.5 million for two years. If the Rams could get something done with Peko for one year and a max value of around $2 million, it would be a worthwhile addition.
Los Angeles appears set on the defensive line with Greg Gaines and Sebastian Joseph-Day on track to replace Ndamukong Suh at nose tackle. However, neither player has proved anything in the NFL and could easily fall short of expectations. If they both flop and struggle early, who do the Rams turn to at nose tackle? Michael Brockers?
That’s where Peko adds value. He wouldn’t have to be an every-down player or surefire starter. He could help coach up the younger guys and provide insurance if they don’t pan out. Not to mention, he’s an excellent run stopper himself.
Peko had a visit with the Lions but other than that, interest has remained relatively low in the 34-year-old. The Rams would be a perfect fit for him, providing them with added depth and a veteran who can help develop younger players such as Gaines and Joseph-Day.
Again, Los Angeles doesn’t need to add anyone else to the roster, but Peko presents a good opportunity for both the player and team.
