Former Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher is rumored as a possible replacement at USC should an opening arise at the conclusion of their season.
2019 could see former Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher back in the Coliseum, but thankfully, not on the sidelines on Sunday afternoon.
Reports, preliminary as they can be this time of year, have him as a “potential” replacement for current USC head coach Clay Helton. Helton, who looks to be circling the drain in Los Angeles, is upside down in the win/loss column heading into a potential gutting against undefeated Notre Dame at the Coliseum.
The Trojans are 5-6 overall, 4-5 in the Pac-12, and 2-3 in the Pac-12 South behind Utah and Arizona State respectively.
Former NFL coach and USC alum Jack Del Rio, most recently of the Oakland Raiders, as well as Fisher are one of a few being mentioned as a replacement in LA.
Fisher, who was jettisoned by the Rams in 2016, has been angling for a new gig in the NFL. However seeing the Rams go from a disastrous 4-12 upon their return to Los Angeles to 11-5 in 2017, and a now bonafide Super Bowl contender with a 10-1 record under Sean McVay, is a likely indicator that the game has passed him by, and his brand of plodding offense and 8-8 football is now a relic in the NFL.
This isn’t about tossing hate at Fisher. Fisher is a decent character. His teams always played hard on defense but underperformed on offense. His style of football is not necessarily vanishing, but isn’t really compatible now or likely moving forward.
Which makes you wonder if he’s even a smart hire for a major program like USC.
Doesn’t it seem like forever ago when the Trojans had Heisman Trophy Candidates at quarterback and running back, were competing for National Championships, and had a profile comparable to Alabama?
Fisher doesn’t bring that back to USC.
The former Rams head coach wasn’t the answer in LA the last time he coached there. He’s also not the answer for any other team in Los Angeles now.
