For the Los Angeles Rams fans that believed that this game was going to present the biggest challenge for the team so far this season, good on you. While the win for the Rams, fueled by our Goffense, was never truly felt in doubt, the Los Angeles Chargers put up some points and made it tighter than we probably wanted.
Besides the fact that Rams are 3-0 and looking like the best team in the NFL, the other narratives that bubbled up after the game were these three: Jared Goff has arrived to shut up his critics, the Rams have already won the NFL West, and our cornerbacks are broken and it’s time to panic. So, let’s get into the overreactions, shall we?
Best Overreaction:
QB Jared Goff played his best game of his career and silenced his “system QB” critics
This seemed like a little bit of a layup from my perspective because Goff wasn’t necessarily coming from a place where he was throwing out these awful stats and fans were just hoping that he’ll magically just fix his terrible play. Instead, critics of Goff just wanted a showy performance where he made some throws that deserve to be in a highlight reel. And that he did.
So, it’s official: Jared Goff is no longer a “system QB.” He’s the franchise QB for the Los Angeles Rams who will eventually have his hands covered in Super Bowl rings.
Worst Overreactions:
With CB Marcus Peters and CB Aqib Talib sidelined indefinitely with injuries, the secondary is doomed and we should start looking for trades.
The Rams received some good news after the game, which was that Marcus Peters has a calf injury and NOT an achilles injury. It also appears that Aqib Talib just rolled his ankles, so both guys don’t seem likely to be out for the season. And even if they miss the next couple of weeks, the Rams have two cornerbacks in Sam Shields and Nickell Robey-Coleman that are very capable backups. The Rams probably have the best depth at cornerback, so while Peters and Talib are stars and the heart of our secondary, we will be OK while they nurse their somewhat minor injuries.
The NFC West has already been won by the LA Rams after week 3.
As the news broke that San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL and is out for the season, many Rams fans assumed that their main competition for the division title just suffered a setback that all but leaves them out of the running for the NFC West crown. This is bad take at this point in the season for many reasons. Just look at the all the crazy stuff that has happened in the NFL in these three short weeks. The Pittburgh Steelers are a dumpster fire, the Tampa Buccaneers are conjuring up Fitzmagic, and the Minnesota Vikings got rolled by the Buffalo Bills at home — anything can happen, Ramily. Rather than pop the week 17 champagne, we should be aware that disaster is always waiting around the corner and Rams fans just have to hope that the team can avoid it.
