Old habits die hard.

In ranking NFL quarterbacks, we can pay attention to tradition, history, and Super Bowl rings. That makes sense, but the NFL is changing quickly. Last week’s Monday Night Football game proved that the new guard of NFL stars have arrived. So, what is NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal writing about this week in regards to his updated QB rankings? That Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has slipped a spot behind Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Gasp! My 2011 pearls are clutched.

At the beginning of the season, it was difficult to find any national NFL article that listed Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff as a top QB. To quote the late Rodney Dangerfield, “no respect.”

For Week 1, Rosenthal’s QB index listed Jared Goff at #18, right behind Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota. Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr was 16!

I’ve been beating the drum for a while now that Jared Goff is going to be an elite quarterback and guess what? His time is now. Yes, Goff and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes II are ranked #2 and #3 behind age-defying New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, but it seems like Gregg’s heart isn’t in it. Judging by his brief write-up in today’s QB index, it feels like Goff is too skinny to make it in the league.

To be fair, this article is an incredibly small sample size and it isn’t fair to harp on it too much, but it illustrates my point point that there remains a resistance to accept Goff as an elite QB.

We’ve heard it all. His first seven games were bad. His hands are too small. Rams Head Coach McVay is the only reason why he’s good. His arms are too skinny. His last name sounds silly. He looks like the love interest in a Anna Kendrick surfing movie. He uses Axe soap. He doesn’t know where the sun rises or sets.

System QB.

One truth that can’t be ignored is that Goff is playing better than many of the favorite sons of the NFL right now. He belongs in the top three of the QB index. So while it still feels like Rosenthal is more preoccupied with guys like Rivers and Rodgers, it doesn’t matter. Time will prove that Goff is a superstar in this league. Will it take until Goff’s left hand is covered with Super Bowl rings? Maybe, but I’ll happily wait.

Jared Goff’s third season is going great and heads are slowly being turned. I’ll say it again: this kid is already elite.
