Early Week Pick: New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers

This is the matchup everyone has been waiting for, a clash of titans in the AFC, a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship. This game will pit the two top teams in the AFC against one another with the inside track for the conference’s top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs up for grabs. The Steelers gained sole possession of the No. 1&nbsp;seed in the&nbsp;conference&nbsp;thanks to their 11-2 record and New England’s Monday Night Football loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 14, but the 10-3 Patriots are right behind them and could force their way back into the catbird position with a victory in this game.

Mark Kaboly believes the Pats lost some mystique during their defeat to the Dolphins:

The only real positive thing that came out of the Patriots loss to the Dolphins for the Steelers is perception. Perception of invincibility is gone now. Sort of like when Balboa cut Drago in Rocky 4. “He’s not a machine, he’s a man.”

Last season, the Patriots vanquished the Steelers in Week 7 as part of their incredible 14-2 campaign that saw them earn the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. They parlayed that into a trio of playoff victories—including a blowout AFC Championship victory over Pittsburgh in Foxborough—that resulted in the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl championship. The Steelers would like to avoid having to travel to New England in January again this year, but they will need to pick up a rare win against this opponent to insure that they’ll retain hosting right throughout the playoffs.
