LOS ANGELES – Rams Head Coach SEAN MCVAY promoted ZAC TAYLOR to quarterbacks coach from assistant wide receivers coach, the team announced today. Taylor originally joined Los Angeles as a member of McVay’s inaugural staff in January 2017. He is now entering his sixth season coaching in the NFL and second with the Rams.
“Zac’s promotion is a testament to him and the coaches that we have in place as well as our desire as an organization to build and grow from within,” McVay said. “He has a clear understanding of our offense and we’re confident in his ability to coach this group at a high level and that his transition into the role will be seamless.”
In 2017, Taylor assisted a receiving corps that concluded with four players with 500-plus receiving yards (Cooper Kupp
-869, Todd Gurley II-788, Robert Woods-781, Sammy Watkins-593). Los Angeles was one of just six teams to accomplish the feat. Instrumental in the development of young receivers such as Kupp, Taylor helped the Rams’ third-round pick finish the season as one of the best rookie wide receivers in the league, ranking first among rookies in first down receptions (42), tied for the most 20-plus yard receptions (12), second in receiving yards (869), tied fourth in touchdown receptions (five) and fourth in receptions (62).
Prior to joining the Rams, Taylor held offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coaching responsibilities at the University of Cincinnati (2016) and the Miami Dolphins (2012-15). After starting his first season with the Dolphins as an assistant quarterbacks coach, Taylor was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2013. He served as the team’s offensive coordinator and primary play-caller in the second half of the 2015 campaign. During his time in Miami, he helped guide the development of signal caller Ryan Tannehill who threw for 3,000-plus yards in each of his first four seasons – the first quarterback in team history to achieve the feat and the second Dolphins quarterback to record multiple 3,000-yard passing seasons, alongside Hall of Famer Dan Marino.
Following a standout college career at Nebraska (2005-06), Taylor briefly played quarterback professionally in 2017. He spent the offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a college free agent and later signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in the fall. Following the season, he joined Texas A&M as an offensive graduate assistant and tight ends coach (2008-11).
Taylor and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of three children: Brooks, Luke and Emma Claire. His younger brother, Press, is currently the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles.
