With mock drafts being released left and right, we’re beginning to find out which prospects are likely to be around when the Rams go on the clock. The majority of projections have Los Angeles grabbing a cornerback in the first round — for obvious reasons.
Among the most popular names are Josh Jackson, Denzel Ward and Mike Hughes, but USA TODAY has a new name for Rams fans to examine.
In Nate Davis’ latest mock draft, he has L.A. taking defensive back Donte Jackson out of LSU.
Hard to go wrong with defensive backs coming out of Baton Rouge. Jackson’s versatility would make him a nice option in L.A. given Trumaine Johnson and Lamarcus Joyner are about to test the open market.
This is a bit of a reach. LSU is known for churning out talented defensive backs every year, but Jackson doesn’t fit the mold of what the Rams are looking for. He’s undersized, despite having great speed and athleticism, and may not be big enough to hold up outside.
This pick is made with the idea that Trumaine Johnson will leave in free agency, which is fine, but Jackson likely fits as more of a nickel corner than a boundary defender. He’d be a nice fit if the Rams were only replacing Nickell Robey-Coleman, but a guy like Hughes or Carlton Davis would make more sense here in the event that Johnson leaves.
