In the first-round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders defied expectations and reached for the player that they wanted: Clemson Tigers EDGE Clelin Ferrell. Was it the smart pick? Probably not. They likely could have traded back to get the same player ten picks later. However, the heart wants what it wants.

The Los Angeles Rams did in fact trade with the Atlanta Falcons to get out of the first-round in order to acquire a second-round (45th) and another third-round selection (79th). This signals that the organization doesn’t have one player that they’re in love with.

If the Rams truly wanted, let’s say, Texas A&M Aggies C Erik McCoy, they could have gotten him with the 31st pick. Or, some would argue, they are confident that he’ll still be around at 45, or maybe even Florida Gators OT Jawaan Taylor could be available. I’m not so sure about this plan. Seems to me that GM Les Snead operates on his own weird, beach-bum rhythm and that means that just like the 2017 NFL Draft, the Rams could be selecting a player like TE Gerald Everett that may seem out of left field.

No, I’m not saying the Rams are going to select a tight end, but they may have their eyes on a prospect that could be considered a… curious pick.

That’s what is fun and frustrating about the draft. Fans can spend hours combing the draft boards in an effort to find the best fit for the Rams and 90% of the time, the team goes in a different direction.

And the Rams have the lucky trend on their side — a run on pass catchers.

So, yeah… I really want the Rams to pick Erik McCoy because it makes sense for the team. Chances are, he won’t be available. And even if he is, the Rams will make a pick that will force fans to Google a name that they have never heard before.

The Rams have had good luck in the third-round as of late, grabbing talent like S John Johnson III and WR Cooper Kupp.

So, in Snead we trust. Sure, let’s go with that.
